A gold coin featuring a scene from Waiting for Godot was launched at the Gate Theatre in Dublin yesterday.
The limited-edition gold and silver coins were presented by the Central Bank to celebrate the centenary of Samuel Beckett's birth.
The coins would be a lasting reminder of not only the month-long Beckett festival, but of Beckett's place in the history of Irish literature as well, said Michael Colgan, director and chairman of the Beckett Centenary Festival and director of the Gate Theatre.
The coin features a scene of Didi and Gogo waiting under a tree in the background, to the right of Beckett's face, because it is the most famous scene from the play, said Emmet Mullins, the coin's designer.
The €20 gold coin and the larger €10 silver coin are on sale at €50 and €32 respectively, or €80 for the set.
