Golfers fundraise for Omagh victims

Europe's leading golfers hope to raise £150,000 for the Omagh Fund through a one-day tournament in Dublin next month

Europe's leading golfers hope to raise £150,000 for the Omagh Fund through a one-day tournament in Dublin next month. The pro-am, to be played at Portmarnock Links, is being headed by Ireland's leading professional, Darren Clarke, a native of Dungannon.

"I used to play golf in Omagh as an amateur and the people there are very close to my heart, especially at this time," said Clarke, who is currently competing in the Smurfit European Open at the K Club. His initiative is rendered all the more poignant by the fact that his wife, Heather, gave birth two weeks ago to their first child, a son whom they christened Tyrone.

The event is to take place on Monday, September 14th when a total of 24 professionals will take part. Clarke is expecting to line up most of the European side which retained the Ryder Cup in Spain last September, along with his Irish colleagues. Competitors at the K Club will observe a minute's silence at 3.10pm today.
