No action is to be taken against Michael Gomez following last month’s controversial fight against Peter McDonagh, the Boxing Union of Ireland (BUI) has announced.
Both McDonagh and Gomez are to be awarded their purses after a union investigation found no evidence of any wrongdoing.
McDonagh walked away with the vacant Irish Lightweight title after Gomez stopped fighting in the fifth round of the bout.
Gomez dropped his guard and began walking to his corner midway halfway through the round leaving referee Sean Russell with no option but to stop the fight.
The BUI announced they were withholding prize money amid speculation that the encounter had been the subject of a betting coup, with reports of large sums being placed on a fight round stoppage.
The investigation heard evidence from the referee, the ringside doctor, the British Boxing Board of Control, bookmakers, and both fighters before returning a verdict.
Cashmans, Eastwoods, and Paddy Power all submitted evidence. Boylesports, however, who suspended betting on the fight a few hours before it was due to take place, did not submit any evidence despite requests from the BUI.
