South African Retief Goosen led for a third round in the Lancome Trophy on Saturday but his advantage slipped one shot to three strokes after a closing bogey.
A three-under-par 68 took Goosen to 17-under-par 196.
McGinley was Goosen's nearest challenger after shooting a 66 to finish on 14 under par.
Nicolas Colsaerts, Goosen's third-round playing partner, kept in touch by shooting a 68 that left him four strokes off the lead.
The 20-year-old Belgian was one shot ahead of England's double winner this year, Ian Poulter. He posted 65, the best round of the day.
Damian McGrane is another on course for an impressive finish. The Wexford man is fifth on 10 under par.
