Carthage - Mr Al Gore returned yesterday to his home state of Tennessee where he cast his ballot in Carthage and awaited the election count in Nashville.

"This is going to be very, very exciting," Mr Gore's wife, Tipper, said after she and her husband voted at about noon (5 p.m. Irish time) at Forks River School in Mr Gore's boyhood home town. "I've been hoping and praying," said Ms Helen Vanderpool, one of about 100 friends and neighbours who turned out to see the Vice-President and wish him well.

Surrounded by his own children, Albert, Sarah and Kristin, Mr Gore playfully asked youngsters gathered at the polling place what they would do if they were president.
