The Government has dismissed reports that Queen Elizabeth II may be preparing an historic state visit to the Republic.

A spokeswoman told ireland.comthis morning: "There are no such plans in the immediate or foreseeable future".

A number of media reports yesterday and today quoted reliable sources as saying Buckingham Palace was getting ready to give the all-clear for the trip.

It was said any visit would probably have to wait until after next year when the Queen celebrates her golden jubilee.
