Government departments and offices are to undergo a comprehensive review, it was announced today.
Taoiseach Bertie Ahern described the series of reviews as an organisational "health check".
The Cabinet has backed the Organisational Review Programme, to be put in place with immediate effect. Work on the project is due to begin before the summer.
"The purpose of the reviews is to ensure that individual organisations have the capabilities - in service delivery, leadership, technology, financial management, project management - to deal with the challenges that they face," Mr Ahern said.

He added that the reviews would "complement the wider review of the Public Service as an entity that is being carried out by the OECD in Paris".
