THE GOVERNMENT has paid off almost €20 million in debts accrued by Fingal County Council on loans for undeveloped housing land, to stop the mounting interest payments on the loan.

The €19.2 million payment, which relates to a 24-hectare plot at Hampton, Balbriggan, was made under the land aggregation scheme. Under the scheme loans on land bought for social and affordable housing but now unlikely to be developed are repaid by the Department of the Environment and the land transferred to the Housing and Sustainable Communities Agency.
