A secondary school student wanted her grandfather named for sexually abusing her so he would be publicly shamed, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court was told.

Thomas Harrington (70), of Glasnevin, Dublin, had his sentence adjourned to February 20th by Judge Dominic Lynch.

The victim's mother said it was her daughter's expressed wish to bring the case to court and she wanted him named so he would be shamed.

Harrington pleaded guilty to sexually abusing the girl between 1993 and 1998 when she was aged eight to 12. Garda Patricia McIntyre said he touched the girl's body through her clothes but did not touch or expose himself. Harrington told the gardai he felt ashamed of himself.
