Four out of ten TDs now have Twitter accounts, according to new research.

The study shows that the micro-blogging site is growing in popularity among elected representatives, with 63 of the 163 current TDs using Twitter.

Green Party TDs account for four out of the top 10 Dáil tweeters. Minister for Communications Eamon Ryan - with 2,385 followers - is the most popular Twitter TD.

Fellow Green Party member Ciarán Cuffe is the second most popular TD on Twitter, while Labour's Joan Burton and Fine Gael's Simon Coveney and Lucinda Creighton round out the top five.

While some politicians fail to fully engage with Twitter, others have seen their profile rise as a consequence of using the medium.

Mr Coveney's follower count rose dramatically following his tweet regarding Taoiseach Brian Cowen's Morning Ireland performance in September.

More recently, Green Party TD Paul Gogarty found himself in controversy again after launching a bitter tirade against Labour leader Eamon Gilmore on the site.

All of the top TD twitter users are dwarfed by the follower count of Senator Dan Boyle, which stands at 6,586. The Senator  was recently told to stop his "irresponsible" tweeting about political issues by a senior Fianna Fáil backbencher close to the Taoiseach.

According to the research, which has been compiled by PR firm Murray Consultants, shows that all six Green Party TDs have a Twitter account. In contrast, just 20 of the 75 Fianna Fáil TDs use the site, equivalent to 27 per cent of all the party's Dáil representatives.

Three quarters of Labour Party TDs have Twitter accounts, as do 37 per cent of Fine Gael TDs and 25 per cent of Sinn Féin TDs.

The research also indicates that a total of 72 TDs have Facebook profiles, equivalent to 44 per cent of all current TDs.

An alternative survey carried out by PR firm Pembroke Communications earlier this year revealed that more than 77 per cent of Irish politicians intend to use social media tools in the next general election campaign.

The research found that fewer than one-third had used social networking tools in the 2007 general election.
