Greenpeace said yesterday it was "throwing down a green gauntlet" to the Government during its EU Presidency to introduce measures to take the Union into an environmentally sustainable 21st century.
The environmental agency has launched a 13 page report on issues ranging from waste generation and disposal to genetic engineering, climate change, the nuclear threat, forestry and fisheries and the pollution of fresh water systems.
"Strong environmental action, at an EU level, is needed immediately to cease the destruction of the natural environment and to protect public health," according to the organisation's campaign director, Mr John Bowler.
