Successive governments have "betrayed consumers and farmers" by failing to introduce meaningful food safety measures, the Green Party spokeswoman on agriculture and food, Ms Paula Giles, has said. This attitude was reflected in the current Government's failure to provide legislative backup for the new Food Safety Authority (FSA), Ms Giles said yesterday.

The Green Party was committed to the establishment of a Dail committee on food safety, the reduction of pesticide use in Irish food by 50 per cent over the next three years and a ban on "the deliberate release of genetically engineered crops and animals".
