Ireland has become the most environmentally unfriendly country in the EU, according to the Green Party, which today announced its intention to table a motion of
no-confidence in the Minister for the Environment, Mr Noel Dempsey.
The party said the motion, due to be put before the Dáil next week, was a result of the Minister’s "complete mismanagement" of waste disposal at a national level, which it said had now turned into a crisis.

Green TD, Mr John Gormley said the Minister appeared to be unable or unwilling to face up to vested interests, and said "that is why he is now pushing the discredited technology of incineration".
Last night Galway County Council voted in favour of an incinerator by one vote to solve the six-day-old waste dispute.
The party described the decision as "crazy" and said incinerators were simply a "quick fix industrial solution to a largely industrial problem" which would have long-term, detrimental effects on the environment.
Today the party released a ten-point "zero waste" strategy which it said should be adopted by the Government and put into effect in Galway "immediately".
The plan includes proposals for the separate collection of wet(organic) and dry(inorganic) waste and the introduction of a weight related waste collection charge.
Green TD, Mr Trevor Sargent said he was "relatively confident" the motion of no confidence in Minister Dempsey would be backed by the other parties adding, the "Government is failing and he’s responsible".
