LAGOS - An unknown group calling itself United Front for Nigeria's Liberation (UFNL) yesterday claimed responsibility for a plane crash which killed 14 people including the eldest son of military ruler, Gen Sani Abacha.
It is the first such claim in years of army rule in Nigeria although the unsigned statement faxed to foreign news organisations did not say how the group carried out the action.
"Units of the UFNL carried out this patriotic attack against the enemies of the Nigerian people, and with it we are signalling an intensification of the campaign to remove this brutal dictatorship by every means possible," said the statement.
Mr Ibrahim Abacha (28), a businessman, and the others were killed when a British made Hawker Siddeley 125 presidential jet in which they were travelling from Lagos to the northern city of Kano - crashed before landing on Wednesday night.
