The People Before Profit Alliance, which is campaigning for a No vote, said yesterday it believed strongly in the need for a positive alternative for Europe.

Ailbhe Smyth, the group's co-convenor, said that because Irish people were the only citizens who will be allowed to vote on the Lisbon Treaty, "we will be voting on behalf of the other 450 million people" in Europe.

A newly formed Munster executive of the Workers' Party, which is also campaigning against Lisbon, described it as "a treaty too far". Chairman of the group Seán Walsh said the treaty would most likely be the last opportunity the Irish people would have to vote on a referendum "as one of the treaty provisions would supersede Ireland's Constitution in that area".
