British police in Birmingham have detained a member of the Irish Guards based at London's Wellington Barracks in connection with the theft of a rifle from an army barracks.

Lance Corp James Piotrowski, (21) with an address in the city's Northfield area was detained in Birmingham this morning on suspicion of firearms offences.

Asst Chief Constable Stuart Hyde said the joint operation with the Royal Military Police to locate the soldier had led to the arrest of two women and one man also on firearms offences.

Mr Piotrowski had served three months in the Iraq.
