Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern has urged Leaving Cert students to exercise care abroad and to respect local laws and customs as they celebrate their results.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has issued a list of basic guidelines for young people planning to celebrate while in a foreign country.
In a press release issued yesterday by the department, Mr Ahern said: "As Minister for Foreign Affairs, I have unfortunately been very aware of some holidays abroad having been ruined, and families suffering tragedy and trauma, because a small minority of young people did not act sensibly.
"After a long number of years studying at second level, many young people are looking forward to taking a well-earned break following the publication of exam results this week. They are more than entitled to celebrate and to relax and enjoy themselves. But they can only enjoy themselves fully if they act sensibly and responsibly."
Mr Ahern set out "a few basic rules" to ensure a safe and pleasant trip. He advised against excessive alcohol consumption and the possession of narcotics which could result in arrest and imprisonment.
In relation to water sports, the Minister warned against swimming after consuming alcohol or food. "All should obey the usual safety rules that apply in pool areas and should only swim, or surf, in areas patrolled by lifeguards."
The Minister also suggested taking precautionary measures before travel such as leaving contact details with a family member.
Adequate medical/travel insurance should be taken out and a European Health Insurance card should be acquired.
