Brendan Grehan SC, defending, also asked for time for the preparation of a probation report. He told the court he understood Mr Bates’s family was in court and he wanted to apologise to them on behalf of his client.

Mr Grehan said a moment of madness on the part of his client had ended Mr Bates’s life and ruined his own and that he was sorry for his actions.

Mr Justice Paul Carney adjourned sentencing and remanded Donohoe in custody until April 16th.
