BRITAIN: Guitarist Eric Clapton (56) has married the mother of his baby daughter, it has been confirmed. The star married Ms Melia McEnery (25), an American, in front of a handful of close family and friends at St Mary Magdalen Church in Ripley, Surrey, on New Year's Day.

Guests were invited to the church for the christening of the couple's six-month-old daughter, Julie Rose, and Clapton's older daughter, Ruth Patricia (16). Ruth was born after Clapton had an affair with her mother, Ms Yvonne Kelly, in 1983, but the rock star did not meet her until 1991.

Following the baptisms, it was announced the couple would marry during the same service, to the shock of many of the guests.

Clapton met Ms McEnery, a graphic artist, in Los Angeles in 1999 while working on an album with BB King. Their daughter Julie was born last June.
