Gardaí investigating the fatal shooting of a young man near Limerick city last night have recovered a firearm close to the scene.
The shooting happened in the village of Ardnacrusha, approximately two miles from Limerick city at 11pm.
Aidan Kelly, (19) with an address at College Avenue, Moyross, Limerick was reportedly known to gardaí.
The victim's body has been taken to the Mid-West Regional Hospital where a post-mortem will be carried out later today by State Pathologist Dr Maire Cassidy.
The scene of the shooting has been preserved for a technical examination.
The Labour Party spokesman on justice, Brendan Howlin, said such killings are happening almost daily.
He referred to Garda figures published yesterday showing homicides rose by almost 60 per cent while detection rates fell to 63 per cent. "Given the number of killings that have taken place already this year, it seems that 2006 is going to be a lot worse," Mr Howlin said.
