Ten Iraqis were killed by gunmen north of Baghdad today, police said.

The men - eight of them policemen - had left a local police station wearing civilian clothes and were travelling in a minivan along with three civilians when gunmen followed them in three cars and sprayed them with gunfire.

The third civilian was wounded.

The attack occurred in the small town of Tarmiya, 25 kilometres north of the capital.

Insurgents have frequently targeted Iraq's security forces. The government wants to increase their numbers as part of a wider plan to reduce reliance on US-led forces.
