A travellers' halting site in Galway will continue to be used as a temporary encampment by the local authority until 1999, the High Court has been told.

A group of residents had applied earlier this week for an order to stop Galway Corporation from turning the encampment near their homes into a permanent halting site.

Mr Justice Geoghegan was told that the travellers had been using the land, owned by the corporation, between Castlepark housing estate and Glean Bhan housing estate in Galway City, since 1981.

The corporation said it hoped to come to an arrangement by December 1999. There were about 50 caravans there.
