A MAN credited with saving Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre from extinction was celebrated at the venue yesterday afternoon.

A MAN credited with saving Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre from extinction was celebrated at the venue yesterday afternoon.

However, impresario Fred O’Donovan did not believe it should have been his hands that were cast in bronze but rather those of sport’s latest pantomime villain, Thierry Henry.

“I would have thought that after last week Henry was the one who should have his hands put in cement and stuck to his arse,” he said. “I thought everybody thought I was dead.”

Gaiety managing director John Costigan said O’Donovan’s most important legacy was to get the building listed in 1977 – otherwise it would have been demolished.
