Former Ireland captain Keith Wood has played his last game for club side Harlequins, it was confirmed today, casting fresh doubt on his international future.

The injured star has been out of action for both club and country since last December, having been plagued by persistent neck and shoulder problems.

And with the Zurich Premiership campaign drawing to a close, 'Quins chief executive Mark Evans has said that Wood is not in a position to play again this season and that his contract will not be renewed next year.

"Keith is still injured but will not play again for Quins this season, nor will he be taken on for next year," Evans said.

Wood's last international appearance came in the qualifier against Russia last September and this news will lead to speculation over his involvement in October's World Cup.

Brian O'Driscoll has assumed the captaincy in the 31-year-old's absence with Shane Byrne filling the vacancy in the front row. However, Eddie O'Sullivan's side has always been galvanised by the hooker's imposing presence and a fit Keith Wood would be sorely missed in Australia.
