Minister for Health Mary Harney has announced an increase of 20 per cent in the income ceiling for medical cards and for the new GP visit

cards.

Under the guidelines a single parent with one child can earn €560 per week and qualify for a medical card. A married couple with two children can earn €850 a week and qualify for a GP visit card.

The Tánaiste urged people to apply for the cards from the HSE. "There are many people who may not realise that they are now eligible for these important benefits," she said.

Ms Harney said the cost the cards would be met out of the estimates for the HSE for this year and next.

She added that "The Government has given priority to this funding and there is no longer any barrier in the way of the cards being issued."

The changes come into place immediately.
