But the Dubliner, in front for the first two rounds at Quinta do Lago, can virtually seal a second Ryder Cup appearance should he lift the $150,000 top prize.
His one-under-par 71 for an 11-under 205 total tied him with German Sven Struver (65), New Zealand's Stephen Scahill (66) and Britons Simon Dyson (67) and David Gilford (69).
The quintet were a stroke better than Sweden's Niclas Fasth (68) and another Briton, David Howell (69).
