Players' Championship
Ireland’s Padraig Harrington has slipped back to level par halfway through his second round of the Players’ Championship at Sawgrass today, while little known Jerry Kelly is the unlikely leader.
Harrington started his round on the back nine and dropped two shots by the time he reached the turn.
Kelly enjoyed much better fortune by shooting to the top of the leaderboard with a six-under par 66.The 34-year-old American, who has never won a PGA event and missed the cut three out of five times at Sawgrass, holds the early lead with a nine-under total 135.
Paul Azinger, the overnight leader, is one shot back in second after carding a two-under par 70.
There is a considerable gathering of the world’s top players several shots back which makes for a promising weekend from the spectators' point of view. One of those being the world number one Tiger Woods. He is six adrift of the leader after shooting a three-under par 69.
The US Masters champions Vijay Singh is also demonstrating his desire in this, the richest event in golf, by moving to six-under halfway through his round.
Darren Clarke made progress by shooting a two-under par 70 for a one-over total 145. That will be enough to ensure the Tyroneman is still around for the weekend as the cut is expected to be two-over par.
