After a false start, a search for the shotgun, and a wait for the Fungie dolphin boat to get out of the way of the currachs, the main race of the annual Dingle Regatta got under way yesterday on a shot fired by Mr Conor Haughey, eldest son of the former taoiseach, Charles Haughey.

It was only the second time in 40 years Mr Haughey senior had not started the main part of the regatta. He had declined the invitation on health grounds, Mr Richard Williams, the commentator, told the crowd of about 300.

Mr Haughey's yacht, the Celtic Mist, was in harbour, along with the naval vessel, L.E. Orla, which was on a courtesy visit and which proved popular with visitors.

A helicopter circled overhead, prompting speculation of a surprise visit by the former taoiseach. However, his father had left his Blasket island home of Inishvickillane and returned to Dublin, Mr Conor Haughey said shortly before he officially launched the three-man senior currach race.

Before firing the opening shot, Mr Haughey was warned by onlookers not to point the gun at the crews and especially not to shoot Fungie as this would wipe out the Dingle economy "in a single shot".

"Where's the helicopter?" he joked.
