The State funeral of former taoiseach Charles Haughey cost an estimated €328,000, it has emerged.
Preliminary figures released by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern show that the costs to his department were estimated at €70,000 although all invoices had not yet been received. These included direct funeral expenses, refreshments afterwards, car and bus hire and florists' costs, but not staff costs.
The highest charges were to the Office of Public Works at approximately €253,000 for structures and barriers to meet security requirements, large screens, lighting and sound systems and other infrastructure.
Mr Ahern, responding in a written reply to Labour's finance spokeswoman Joan Burton, who asked for a breakdown of costs, also said that costs for the Department of Defence were of the order of €5,000 for ceremonial military involvement and did not include staff costs.
The Taoiseach did not have the figures for the estimated costs for the Department of Justice for Garda security, traffic management and general policing of the occasion.
