The Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA) is to stage a "no pay" protest on the newly opened M4 toll road on Monday week.

Speaking on radio this morning, Jimmy Quinn of the IRHA said: "Motorists and hauliers have had enouigh of being mugged."

Mr Quinn said the €6.20 toll for a lorry needs to be cut in half adding that road tolls are a third layer of taxation on cars.

"In the long term they [the Government] are going to have to rebalance the money they are taking from the transport sector . . . they can't have it every way," Mr Quinn added.

The hauliers, who insist toll charges are too high, are planning to drive up to the toll booths at 7am and refuse to pay the charges.

Under the contract between toll operator Eurolink and the National Roads Authority, the barriers must be raised if vehicles are met with delays or queues of about six cars or more.

The hauliers say this clause should oblige Eurolink to raise their toll barriers to allow traffic-free passage.
