University heads and other senior third-level managers are to get average pay rises of almost 17 per cent.
Pay increases for the third level representatives range from less than 5 per cent to 24 per cent under recommendations from the Buckley Review Body on Higher Remuneration in the Public Sector.
Its latest report notes that salaries for senior third-level managers trail behind "private-sector posts of comparable weight". The Department of Finance last night said it would implement the increases.
However, the report calls for a system of "performance-related awards" for those in senior third-level posts, but only when the "conditions are in place".
While many in the third-level sector who are to benefit from the increases expressed disappointment at the level of awards, secondary teachers said they would use them to bolster their case for a substantial rise.
The increase in salary across the 55 posts examined is 16.7 per cent. The post-holders will also get increases available under the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness (PPF).
The presidents of Trinity College and UCD will get an 11.1 per cent increase, bringing their annual salary to £118,688. The president of UCC will get an 17.5 per cent rise, bringing his salary to £118,688.
The president of NUI Galway will get a 7.1 per cent rise, bringing his annual salary to £108,985. The heads of DCU, NUI Maynooth and the University of Limerick will get rises of 22.9 per cent, bringing their annual salaries to £108,138. Registrars, secretaries and bursars at UCD and UCC will get a 17.6 per cent increase, bringing their salaries to £84,400.
The same post-holders at TCD will get a 14.5 per cent rise, bringing their salaries to the same level. A 10.3 per cent rise has been awarded to similar post-holders in NUI Galway and the University of Limerick (making £79,125). A 21.3 per cent rise has been granted for these posts at NUI Maynooth and DCU (making £79,125).
Directors of Cork, Galway/ Mayo and Waterford Institutes of Technology are to get a 17.1 per cent rise (making £84,400). Directors of other institutes will get a salary of £79,125, a 24 per cent increase. The president of DIT will get a 22.9 per cent rise, (making £108,1380), while directors of the college will get a rise of 17.4 per cent (making £74,905).
The presidents of Mary Immaculate and St Patrick's colleges of education will get a rise of 17.4 per cent (making £74,905). These figures include the first phase of PPF.
