The Western Health Board is considering withdrawing its advertising from the Sunday Independent following the publication of a controversial article by Mary Ellen Synon about the recent Paralympics in Australia.

The chairman of the Western Health Board, Dr Greg Kelly, told a meeting yesterday that he had been advised that the executive of the health board was reviewing its position with regard to advertising in that newspaper.

"The remarks made in the article were highly offensive and did no service to anybody, least of all the Olympians," he said. A councillor, Mr John Flannery, said the Paralympians deserved congratulations, not criticism.
