Nelson Mandela, who is always so determined to work for the underdog. I have just returned from a trip to South Africa, where I visited Robin Island. Even as a prisoner the work he did was impressive.

What do you regard as the top three problems facing Ireland's health system?

Speech and language therapy services in Ireland are in a shambles. Without consistent therapy we are denying people the right to communicate, to express themselves and to participate in society. Secondly, our mental health service is struggling to keep its head over water. Finally, the HSE embargo on staff is crippling the health service.

What is your greatest extravagance?

A spa day in Powerscourt.

What is your most unhealthy habit?

I find it difficult to stop and take a break.

How do you relax?

Walking, cycling, gardening, music, pilates and t'ai chi.

Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?

Bette Midler.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

A good day's work, enjoying a meal with my family or walking by the sea.

What trait do you most value in your friends?

Honesty and a good sense of humour.

What talent would you most like to have?

To be able to speak another language well and dance the tango properly.

Do you use alternative/ complementary medicines or therapies?

Yes, I use aromatherapy massage, reflexology and homeopathy.

What is your earliest memory?

Aged three, going on holidays with my family to a bungalow in Portrane.

What is your most treasured possession?

My family and my home.

What other career might you have chosen?

Architect or a vet.

What books or films have inspired you?

I found Jung Chang's book Wild Swans inspirational. Films include Beautiful Mind, The Kite Runner and Patch Adams.
