A leading hospital has warned people to consult their doctor before coming to seek medical attention.
Staff at Letterkenny General Hospital in Co Donegal are struggling to cope with a high number of patients.
A statement from the hospital has asked the public to consult with their local GP if they do not require urgent medical attention.
Even those with a planned procedure may not be given a hospital bed.
“We wish to inform the general public that Letterkenny Hospital is experiencing high activity levels at present,” said the statement.
Phone ahead
“Due to the high numbers attending the Emergency Department, people who require non-urgent medical attention should consult their GP in the first instance. Those who are attending the Emergency Department may experience delays.”
Due to the high number of admissions recently, patients who are due for a planned admission as an inpatient should phone beforehand to confirm the availability of a bed, said a spokesman.
Management at the hospital said they regretted any inconvenience caused and thanked their patients and the public for their co-operation.
This is the latest controversy to hit the busy facility. A group set up to examine a flood at the hospital three months ago is due to release its findings at the end of this month.
Last year, up to 70 per cent of the footprint of the hospital was flooded, causing up to €40 million worth of damage, after torrential rain.
