WEDNESDAY is National No Smoking Day and to highlight this the Smoking Target Action Group (STAG) is launching a campaign on passive smoking called Growing Up In Smoke. The group's leaflet emphasises that "secondhand smoke has more tar, nicotine, carbon monoxide and other chemicals that cause cancer than the smoke inhaled through the cigarette itself". The campaign will by launched tomorrow by the Minister for State at the Department of Health, Brian O'Shea, and includes posters, leaflets, stickers as well as national and local publicity. In relation to the law, the campaign urges people to remember that smoking is banned completely in schools, creches, nurseries, playgroups and school buses and that local health boards should be informed if the ban is not enforced. Further details from (01) 4961626.

A Smokers Quit Line - 1800 200700 - will be operated by the Irish Cancer Society from today until Friday to provide advice and encouragement to those trying to quit smoking. The line will be staffed by trained smoking cessation counsellors who will give the smoker information on practical ways to quit and provide advice on dealing with cravings for tobacco and other difficulties.
