TOURETTE Syndrome Association Inc (USA) in conjunction with the Tourette Syndrome Association of Ireland is hosting an open genetics workshop next Sunday at the Lecture Theatre, Arts Block, TCD, Dublin from 3 to 6 p.m. Tourette Syndrome is a neurological condition which manifests' itself in childhood with motor and vocal tics like facial grimacing, muscle jerking, grunting, throat clearing and yelling. There may be other symptoms like hyperactivity or obsessional behaviour. The syndrome affects four times as many boys as girls.
Speakers include US experts in the fields of child and adolescent psychiatry and neurology.
All are welcome, admission free.
CHERISH, the association of single parent families, is running a ten week parenting course from Tuesday, October 1st from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. The course covers topics like discipline, appropriate ways of giving praise and how to cope with giving information on an absent parent. WOMEN'S Health and Arts in Tallaght (WHAT) Festival runs from today until next Friday. The festival, centred on four west Tallaght community centres has been organised by local women. The festival aims to provide a social focus for women in the community and features workshops on art and health as well as discussions and an exhibition in the new Tallaght Community Arts Centre. NATIONAL Tea Day, the Alzheimer Society's principal fundraising activity, will take place on Thursday, October 3rd. The society hopes to raise £200,000 to enable it to continue and extend the service offered to victims and their carers through their network of 24 branches around the country. National Tea Day will also raise awareness of this debilitating disease which now ranks as the fourth largest killer in the western world. Social & Personal has organised a special fundraising afternoon "Tea for Two" next Sunday, in the Shelbourne Hotel from 3 to 6 p.m. There will be music from the Cafe Orchestra and an auction which will include breaks in Ashford Castle and Adare Manor and a trip to London incorporating tickets to Riverdance.

SO You Want to Stop Smoking autumn courses at St Vincent's Hospital, Elm Park, Dublin 4 will commence shortly. The six week courses are run from the Department of Preventive Medicine and Cardiology at the hospital.
