In week four of the challenge to turn their lives around, Fiona Tyrrell finds out how our three candidates are doing and what goals they have set for next week

With four weeks of the turn-your-life-around challenge now complete, all three candidates are thrilled with the tangible results from their healthy eating, stress busting, life changing and fitness regimes.

They have been losing so much weight in fact that nutritionist Nuala Collins has advised them to take different measures to prevent them losing weight too fast.

Dermot has been told to increase his intake of carbohydrates, Fiona to increase her portion size and Martin, the lucky man, to increase his carbohydrate intake as well as bump up his consumption of alcohol by one unit.

Total converts to the programme at this stage, they all have vowed to continue most elements of their regimes once the competition is over and are setting more and more goals for themselves.

The low-fat and five-fruit-a-day diet is not difficult and it's cheaper than buying multivitamin supplements, reasons Fiona Gilboy.

"It's amazing how just a few weeks of healthy living can catch on," she says.

They have all lost significant amounts of weight and have toned up a lot. After four weeks Dermot is 13.4lbs lighter, Martin has lost a stone and Fiona has lost almost six out of the seven pounds she aims to lose over the six weeks.

The three are also receiving a lot of attention and encouragement from people who are following the story of their progress and they find this really motivating.

Martin has got many positive comments in both social and business situations and even had calls from people he had lost contact with over the years.

Dermot has had to deal with queries from people queuing behind him in Starbucks wondering whether he is "really allowed to have that cappuccino?".

All three are being advised by a panel of experts made up of fitness coach Philip Phelan, nutritionist Nuala Collins, stress management expert Karen Belshaw and life coach John Sharry.

Karen's expertise has been called upon by all three during the past week. Her positive self-talk helped Dermot to have a great session in the gym, while her progressive muscle relaxing (PMR) exercises are helping bride-to-be Fiona keep calm amid all the wedding plans. Martin uses Karen's visualisation exercises when in stressful situations.

All three candidates are taking part in the VHI Turn Your Life Around Challenge.

You can keep up to date on their progress every Tuesday in the HealthSupplement and by logging on to www.vhi.ie where the three candidates post regular updates on their activities and lifestyle changes.
