'I've seen childbirth and I'd rather have a vasectomy, in fact I'd rather have 10 vasectomies," explained presenter and comedian Seán Moncrieff who will, along with 2FM's Gerry Ryan, be sharing his candid views on vasectomy tonight on RTÉ 1 television.
After "humming and hawing" about getting the snip and having two more children than originally intended Moncrieff eventually decided to go for the plunge and was surprised at how "incredibly simple" the procedure was.
"After it was done I wondered what I had been worried about. I literally asked, 'was that it?' after the operation," he said.
The documentary, The Snip, was made by David Power, the director of the critically acclaimed documentary Chavez: Inside The Coup. Taking an innovative approach to the subject, the documentary mixes fly-on-the-wall footage of a vasectomy with candid and at times irreverent commentary from men who have experienced "the snip".
Star of the show, however, is Larry O'Rourke from Westport, Co Mayo. The documentary's film crew followed Larry and his wife Nicole as they go through the counselling and surgery process.
"We have five kids and had decided that was it; we weren't going to have more. I don't like artificial contraception and otherwise the wife wouldn't let me next or near her. That was the long and the short of it.
"I was not afraid of the operation. I was more nervous of having cameras record the whole thing, but I thought that if it helps someone else along the way it would be worth it," he explained.
He hopes that his part in the show will dispel some of the myths and piseogs surrounding the issue.
"People often think that like a neutered dog, a man will get fat and lazy after the operation, he said.
"It's not like that. There is no difference, except you can have sex without worrying about it."
• The Snip will air this evening at 10.15 p.m. on RTÉ 1.
