The first thing you should do when faced with a sleep problem is to address your "sleep hygiene". This is the rather formal name for ensuring that you maximise the conditions under which sleep will occur naturally.
Establish a regular bedtime routine - go to bed at the same time every evening.
Have a winding-down process for an hour-and-a-half before going to bed.
Avoid alcohol, caffeine and spicy foods before bedtime.

Take regular exercise, but not within four hours of going to bed.
Keep the bedroom cool, with a temperature no higher than 75 degrees Fahrenheit
Keep eyes open instead of closing them to go to sleep. When the eyelids get heavy, keep them open. The next time they open, it should be morning!
