Some, such as Zombies, Run! put a pep in your running step by inventing a scenario where you are being chased by zombies and generally trying to survive.
Others, such as the app for the wearable tracker FitBit, reward you with badges for reaching goals including steps per day or flights of stairs climbed, and many apps let you compete with friends who are also tracking their physical activity during the day.
