Get up, stand up during your workday

If you have a sedentary job and the only time you move is to shift yourself from one seat to another, you are not doing your body any favours. Studies have shown that prolonged sitting is as bad for you as smoking.

Research has linked sitting all day to back pain, obesity, type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even early death.

If you spend a lot of time at your desk, try taking a short break every hour to get up, walk around, stretch or climb the stairs. You could even try standing for a portion of your day using a sit-stand desk. In a recent statement in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, a group of experts recommended two hours of standing or light activity for sedentary employees, eventually working up to four hours per day.
