Summer in Ireland can occasionally mean eating al fresco, or even going the whole hog and packing a portable meal for a day trip.

But whether you are munching sandy sandwiches on the beach or batting flies from the basket at the riverbank, make sure you keep the food cool to help avoid food poisoning.

The safefood website offers some tips, including chilling cooked food thoroughly in the fridge before you leave, transporting and storing the food in a cool box or insulated bag and disposing of leftover perishable foods once they have warmed up.

It is particularly important to keep cooked meats, quiches, dairy products and salad or sandwiches with mayonnaise chilled, and if there’s raw meat in the bag (if you are planning a barbecue) make sure to keep it separate from other foods and to wash your hands or use antibacterial wipes after handling it.
