Health scan lifestyle Q&A

Do you think you have a healthy lifestyle?

I used to be a lot healthier but I’m still fairly active. I live in Kells but I’m in Dublin about four days a week, so I drive up to Dublin, park the car and then cycle in and out to work so I’d be on the bike 45-50 minutes a day.

How often do you exercise?

I try to get out running a couple of times a week. If I’m starting to put on weight, it’s more often. I’ve been running since I was in my early 20s. The old joints are not as good as they used to be and I have to be careful with my knees and my back, so the most I would do now is about five or six kilometres.

Do you get your five a day?

Definitely in summer it would be five. I’m not keen on buying fruit and veg that has come half way around the world, so in the winter it’s a bit problematic – I’d be closer to three than five. I try to eat quite a bit of broccoli as I have inherited high cholesterol and broccoli is good for that. I eat peas, beans, leeks, salads and beetroot too.

Do you worry?

A little bit. I would have been more of a worrier in the past, but I think, as you get older, you get more perspective on things or you think things might not be great for a while but you know you will come out the other side.

What do you do to relax?

Anything that’s not to do with broadcasting is relaxation. At the moment I’m doing a PhD in Irish history to relax – the trouble is, presenting the History Show, history has now become part of my broadcasting. I find going to the National Library for a few hours quite relaxing, but recently the ultimate relaxation is watching two episodes of South Park back to back.

What’s your unhealthiest habit?

I have a sweet tooth. I find it very difficult not to have a scone every day and I’m addicted to Kit Kats. If I’m trying to cut back, it will be a Rich Tea biscuit.
