Maura Derrane, TV presenter
Do you think you have a healthy lifestyle?
Yes and no. I go through periods where I am really healthy and exercising a lot and then I slip back to my old ways, especially in winter when I don’t want to put my nose outside the door. I enjoy walking and also yoga, because it really tones your body. My top health tips are to drink lots of water, get regular exercise and always wear sunscreen to protect your skin.
How often do you exercise?
I find it hard to motivate myself to go to the gym, but now that I am doing the mini marathon I am on a mission to get to Fitness Together about three times a week. I love being outdoors in good weather but the gym is great on those dark winter nights.
Do you get your five a day?
Not all five everyday. It is difficult when you’re working and often grab food on the run. I generally don’t stick to a diet and love junk food. But now and again I do a detox and eat only fruit and veg.
Do you worry?
Not really, unless there is something really urgent on my mind. But I am lucky that I don’t take life too seriously. I believe whatever will be will be and there is not much we can do about it. I think people worry far too much about things that never happen.
What do you do to relax?
Long walks by the sea and enjoying time with family. Being from the Aran Islands I grew up surrounded by such natural beauty, so I regularly need walks in the country and by the sea.
What’s your unhealthiest habit?
I love chocolate and really need to cut back on it. Also I enjoy my wine. I recently discovered that my cholesterol was slightly raised, so I’ve switched from butter to a low-fat spread. I keep lots of berries and natural yogurt in my fridge, but will always have a frozen pizza in my freezer for emergencies!
