Do you think you have a healthy lifestyle?
I think I’m reasonably healthy. I try hard, as I do believe that we have to take our health into our own hands. Having said that, a lot of the time it’s in the lap of the gods. I got a shock when I discovered I had raised cholesterol, but I’ve successfully brought it down through diet, which was a very positive experience.
How often do you exercise?
As often as the schedule allows. A good week would be exercising three times. I used to play lots of tennis, but nowadays it’s not as regular – just the occasional game, which I really enjoy. I have to enjoy the exercise itself, otherwise I just wouldn’t do it.
I have an exercise bike at home, and I watch TV shows while I’m working out. We have a little dog and I also really enjoy walking with him.
Do you get your five a day?
I try to, but time is often an obstacle. Juicing is a big thing for me: I’d drink a lot more fruit and veg than I actually eat. Current favourites juices are pineapple and grapefruit; or carrot, beetroot and apple.
Do you worry?
Sometimes. I wouldn’t be human if I didn’t. But I’m not a born worrier, definitely more of a glass-half-full person. The workload can be a source of worry, but I’m good at prioritising, which helps a lot. I would worry about family and their health – but again, who doesn’t?
What do you do to relax?
I find it hard to relax – it’s the Ulster work ethic! We have lovely villages in Kent, where we live, and I really enjoy pottering around the bric-a-brac and antiques shops. My favourite way to relax is a meal with friends.
What’s your unhealthiest habit?
When I’ve been working hard I feel I deserve a reward, like a piece of chocolate or a slice of cake, but I’ve got into the habit of substituting the sweet craving with one of my Pro-activ yoghurts, which keep my cholesterol in check too. Some indulgence is allowed, though. You can’t be good all the time.
