VACCINE BOOST: In a timely reminder of the importance of vaccinating against flu in older people, a recent study from the UK has found mortality rates were lower in those aged 75 and over who had with the influenza jab compared with those who had not been vaccinated.

This held true even outside the influenza period, which the authors say strongly indicates a protective effect for vaccination.

Over the four year and a half years of the study the proportion of deaths attributable to flu during periods of influenza was 13.4 per cent in unvaccinated people compared with 2.2 per cent in vaccinated people. So, if you haven't had it yet, now would be a good time to make an appointment to do so.
