Diabetes: Oral medication, diet, exercise and blood glucose testing are a key to the management of type two diabetes and to staving off complications, yet research reveals that those affected by the condition are not treating them with equal importance. The results of a new national survey show that an appropriate diet and adequate exercise are not being followed by many people with the illness. It is estimated that as many as 140,000 people in Ireland have diabetes, although many of them may as yet be undiagnosed. - SmithKline Beecham Diabetes Educational Committee

Women who are exposed to cigarette smoke are not only at higher risk of developing lung cancer than men, but they may also be at greater risk of bladder cancer, an American study has shown. The researchers in Los Angeles studied 1,514 people with bladder cancer. They found that the risk of bladder cancer in female smokers was significantly higher than that in men who smoked a comparable number of cigarettes. Bladder cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the United States. The research concluded that the study added one more piece of evidence to a possible higher susceptibility of women to smoking related cancers.
