Menopause: A series of information meetings on conventional approaches to the menopause is under way throughout the Republic. The meetings, run by GPs and practice nurses, will discuss menopausal symptoms and how to cope with them, as well as long-term risks, including osteoporosis. Meetings this week are today at 8 p.m. at the Grand Hotel, Malahide, Co Dublin; tomorrow at 8 p.m. at the Earl of Desmond Hotel, Tralee, Co Kerry; and Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Doyle Tara Hotel, Blackrock, Co Dublin. More details from 01-4734305.

Stress: The latest advice on how to cope with stress is to do nothing. "A few hours of quality inactivity each day could be better than exercise for boosting immunity and prolonging life," according to Prof Peter Axt, a German health researcher. In On The Joy Of Laziness, his recent paper, Prof Axt cites research that shows people who run long distances into their 50s are using up energy they need for other purposes, and are therefore more likely to suffer memory loss (London Independent).

Substance misuse: The Clanwilliam Institute has launched a programme for people with substance-misuse problems (alcohol and drugs) and/or problem gambling. The programme involves the participants attending three mornings per week (8 a.m. to 10 a.m.) for four weeks. The programme will use individual therapy, group work and couple and family therapy, and include a support group meeting once a week for three months. More details from 01-6761363.
