Diets: For those who relish the thought of eating their favourite chocolate bars without the prospect of having to deal with an expanding waistline, there was good news yesterday with the announcement by Nestlé Ireland that it has introduced low-carbohydrate versions of two of its most popular chocolate products to the Irish market.
The low-carb KitKat and Rolo products will, however, cost more - a two-finger KitKat normally costs 36 cent, the low-carb version will cost €1.20. A tube of Rolo, which currently costs 59 cent, will cost €2.30 in low-carb format.
While low-carb chocolate is already available in some stores under the Atkins and Myoplex brands, this is the first time a mainstream confectionery manufacturer has created low-carb versions of its leading brands.
The products have been developed to cater for the increasing number of people who follow a low-carb lifestyle. In the US, a comprehensive range of low-carb variants of food products, from breakfast cereals to soft drinks, has become available over the past number of years.
Nestlé said research indicated that in Ireland almost one in three adults were tying to lose weight "most of the time".
