Do you exercise?

I only exercise when I have the time. I do some walking a few times a week and throw in a few rounds of golf. When I walk I walk four miles and occasionally I'd climb a mountain in summer.

Which mountains have you climbed?

Well, I've climbed Carrantouhil, Mount Brandon, which is easy, and Croagh Patrick in Mayo. I'm going to do Croagh Patrick again this summer.

Are you health conscious?

I have my own diet that consists of porridge in the morning, tea and bread but I wouldn't be overly conscious. I like fruit and I love fish but I don't eat it because it's good for me. I gave up smoking 40 years ago and I never drank.

Have you noticed many changes in GAA players' training techniques over the years?

I used to train the Kerry team in Dublin years ago and we did a good bit of everything, like running short and long. Nowadays they work to a programme laid down by different experts. I was at a seminar recently where it is now recommended that players cut down on training because they spend too much time training. It keeps changing.

What are your health tips?

I've been lucky with my health. I've never suffered from anything serious. My advice is to just take normal care and don't overdo anything.

If Micheál intends climbing Croagh Patrick this summer, he needs to be fit for the ascent. Here are some valuable climbing tips from Everest climber Grania Willis:

Preparation for any climb is half the battle so regular cardiovascular workouts are a good idea. Increase intensity and duration is a must.

One of the best ways to get hill fit is to get out on the hills. Good nutrition is very important and Micheál also needs to be aware of both pre-hydration and rehydration techniques.

Clothing is also paramount - good walking shoes and proper socks are vital and wet weather gear should always be carried.
